between grace and poverty
_________________
MARIO MARINO

between grace and poverty is an exhibition featuring 100 works by photographer Mario Marino from the years 2013–2023. Marino's work is part of a long tradition of humanistic photography. His images are strongly influenced by photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, and Walker Evans. His street photography and portraits, referred to as “photographic psychograms,” are not spontaneous snapshots, but rather the result of an intensive and respectful process of encounter and trust. Mario Marino does not seek fleeting gestures, but rather the inner world of his subjects. He strives to establish a connection with the people he portrays in order to reveal a deeper level of personality. His portraits are often created during long walks or in a staged setting, where he engages in intense exchanges with the people. He takes the time to understand their cultural and personal backgrounds, which is reflected in the posture, gaze, and expression of those portrayed. The careful composition and conscious use of light and color contribute to conveying a certain mood or telling a story.
Mario Marino's psychograms show people in all their dignity, vulnerability, and emotional depth. The faces and eyes of those portrayed speak volumes and tell the story of an entire life, condensed into this one intimate moment in the picture.
“For me, photography means taking an interest and condensing the personality in the portrait, immersing myself and merging with the situation—that's what my travels are all about.” MARIO MARINO
